Research Abstract |
Today, Japanese law requires that all Japanese department stores must conduct at least two fire drills each year. It is quite realistic to state that part-time workers throughout the nations' many supermarkets and department stores, are seldomly educated on aspects of fire safety by their employers. A general questionare on fire safety precautions was conducted the employees at 22 large-scale retail stores in Takasaki, Yokohama and Kumamoto City. Questions focused on a variety of topics including fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, emergency exits, and rescue equipment. The results are as follows : In general, there was a very distinct diference in responses concerning knowledge of workplace surroundings and usage of fire related safeguards. Two major groups can be established based on the level of knouledge of such. In general those with a higher level of knowledge tended to include the following attributes ; male, 30s, 40s, a full time employee, working history of 10 years or more, previous experience in a fire accident, and prior experience in fire drills and/or emergency drills. While those with less knowledge tended include the following attributes ; femal, under 30, on previous fire related experience, a part time employee, less than 10 years working experience, little or on fire drill experience and/or emergency related drills. A cross table analysis indicates that approximately 70% of the respondees knew of 3 or 4 safeguards at their workplace, however this decreases to 10% for those whom had a hands-on working knowledge on using them. Of special concern, it seems hazardous that users of fire equipment at their workplace had no discrepancy to the lack of knowledge amongst fellow colleagues. Finally, the main objective of this study will be formulate a fire safety checklist for indicating required improvements for working conditions of department store employees to set safety fork condition against fire accident.
