In 1994 I mainly researched the following : 1.Goncharov's view on Japan and the Japanese at the end of the Edo period in his travel sketch "The Frigate 'Pallas'" 2.The life and work of the first Japanese professional interpreter from Russian, SHIGA Chikatomo 3.The work and view on Japan of the Russian teachers Kolenko and Gray at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages and Koeber at Tokyo University, the Polish emigre B.Pilsudski and the Russian emigre Matveev 4.The relations between Japan and the Rusian Far East and Sakhalin via the Sea of Japan 5.The rise and fall of fishery in the northern seas In 1995, I continued researching the above and also researched : 1.The introduction of Russian culture into Japan through such graduates of the Russian department at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages as FUTABATEI Shimei and SAGANOYA Omuro 2.The influence of Russian emigres on Japanese culture 3.The cultural significance of the treaty, exchanging Sakhalin for the Kuril Islands, and the Russo-Japanese war In 1996 I published the results of my research, and in 1994-1997 I published 14 papers in Japan (one will appear this April), 3 in Russia, 2 in Germany, and 1 in Poland. Twice I read a paper at an international conference in Vladivostok. I also conducted research and collected materials in Sapporo, Niigata, Osaka, Nagasaki, and on the Izu peninsula.
