Research Abstract |
Recent "Formula Manipulation Systems" are capable not only with symbolic computation but also with threefold Numeric-Symbolic-Graphic facilities. They give powerful tools for mathematical education as well as research works. Following previous year's works, we have tried using such systems to construct educational drawings to "understand through looking", especially for calculus. The results will be published in a study report. Regrettedly, according to the time limitation, our report is still an intermediate one. But we are preparing a texthook with explanation. Further we plan series to learn "calculus through seeing". The education of calculus in Japan has been believed to be well organized until recent days. However after 1990, it declines rapidly and is going to collapse. We feel much behind to recent renewal movements especially in United States. For future education in Mathematics as well as calculus, we cannot avoid new technologies including computers. For example, we may use computer for tedious calculation, and have deeper understanding through figures. As its first step, I hope that our work was succesful.
