Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to carry out the social anthropological study on the customary law and leadership in Southeast Asia. Here, Southeast Asian peoples means the ethnic groups including the native people and chinese of Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, who belong linguistically to the Austronesian and Mandalin. Each linguistic group share similar cultural traits but their historical background about political systems and ethnic mutual relationships differ from country to country. The framework of our study can be termed neither as an ethnological study of each ethnic group nor as a world-wide cross-cultural study, rather it is a comparative study within a specified middle-scale cultural area. The process of social in tegration and formation of leadership in Southeast Asia is not just a result of social inter action but an important social matter, with which a shared value system and symbolic cosmoligy is expressed. The aim of the scholars involved in this project is to collect data on the process of local politics and function of ethnicity in each country to analyze various aspect of social integration and formation of nation-stats under the strong infulences of modernization. To carry out the comparative study, we made our project as a multi-countries joint research and we could complete our purpose with good teamwork and frequent exchange of informations about out study. The result will be published from the National Museum of the Philippines within one year.
