Research Abstract

Time is running out for the men who fought world War II.Many Japanese, remorseful about the atrocities they committed in China and South-east Asia, want to unburden themselves. Their Testimony should be collected lest Japanese culture's suppression of guilt deniesposterity this chapter of our history.
Do the Japanese feel guilt? We have a sense of shame, and don't want others to learn of our wrongdoing. But do individuals ever agonize privately over their own misconduct? Some Japanese Soldiers deeply regretted their brutality oversea, but were never asked to tell their stories for the record.
Nevertheless, some former soldiers have come forward to tell about the Rape of Nanking in 1937 and the atrocities committed in northern China and the South Pacific.Ex-police officers have admitted torturing political prisoners in Japan.
