Research Abstract

本研究は、「地球史における生物界の大異変は、海底熱水活動によって、海洋へのリン及び重金属元素のフラックスが急激に増加した為である」という、研究代表者の新しい仮説の検証を行いつつ、初期地球における生物界の進化の原因を明らかにすることを目的として行われた。
本研究では、平成7及び8年度に、A地域:カナダ・南オンタリオ州、B地域:カナダ・ニューファンドランド島地域、C地域:フランス北部・ノルマンディー地域及びD地域:南アフリカ・カ-プバ-ル地域、以上4地域において精密な地質調査及び系統的な岩石試料の採集を行った。採集された約30〜18億年前及び約7〜5億年前に海底で生成した堆積岩及び古土壌については、各研究分担者により岩石学的、鉱物学的、無機地球化学的、有機地球化学的及び同位体組成の変化が明らかにされ、次のような重要な知見が得られた。
1.本研究によって得られた種々の地球化学的データ、特に古土壌の鉄の化学及び炭素同位体組成、堆積岩に含まれる有機物及び硫化鉱物の同位体組成などから、約30億年前には、すでに種の分岐が行われており、大気・海洋は酸化的であったことが明らかとなった。また、約27〜20億年前に大規模な海底熱水活動が起こり、生物活動に大きな影響を与えた可能性も明らかとなった。
2.約5億5千年前に起こった骨格生物の爆発的発生は、全世界的な規模における海洋の化学組成の変化(特に、リンなどのフラックスの増加)及び同位体組成の変化と密接な関係がある可能性が高いことが明らかとなった。また、大規模な浅海の生成や気候など環境変化が起こった可能性が高いことも明らかとなった。これらの変化は、マントル対流の変化などによる超大陸の分裂に伴う現象と考えられる。
上記1及び2の研究成果は、資源地質学会、資源地質学会・鉱物学会・岩石鉱物鉱床学会合同学会、地球惑星科学関連学会およびアメリカ地質学会において計20篇の発表として公表された。さらに、国際学会誌である"Geology"、"Geochimica Cosmochimica Act"、"Chemical Geology"、"Ore Deposit Reviews"などに5篇発表済み、または印刷中である。さらに約20篇の論文を準備中である。
