Research Abstract |
UNDER THE THEME OF JAPAN'S ROLE IN THE ASIA-PACFIC COOPERATION,THIS RESEARCH WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE SUB-THEMES : MICROECONOMIC REFORM AND DEREGULATION,REORGANIZATION OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR,AND THE NEW ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN A MARKET ECONOMY.IN MARCH 1996, THE FIRST RESEARCH CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN WHICH PAPERS WERE PRESENTED CONCERNING JAPAN'S FINANCIAL REFORM,PUBLIC UTILITIES,AND THE FISCAL INVESTMENT AND LOAN PROGRAM. IN FEBRUARY 1997, THE SECOND CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY WHERE DISCUSSIONS WERE CENTERED AROUND TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY,JAPAN'S LABOR MARKET,AND DEREGULATION IN AUSTRALIA AND NEWZEALAND.THE THIRD CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN NANGYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY,SINGAPORE,IN WHICH PAPERS CONCERNING TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT,INTERDEPENDENCE OF MACRO ECONOMIC POLICIES,HOUSING POLICY IN SIGAPORE AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN ASIA. THE MOST IMPORTANT FINDINGS THAT CAME OUT OF THIS INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WERE 1) COORDINATION OF MACROECONOMIC POLICIES ACROSS ASIA-PACIFIC REGION IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT AND 2) NO LESS IMPORTANT IS THE PHENOMENON OF SYNCHRONIZATION OF MICROECONOMIC PEFORMS AND POLICY DESIGN CONTEST AMONG US,JAPAN,AUSTRALATIA,AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN ECONOMIES.
