Research Abstract |
This research is intended to integrate and promote the four approaches of pursuit toward a new concept, the virtual reality. The approaches are the elucidation of mechanism, the interface design, the world construction, and the evaluation on applications. This administrative group managed the entire research projects by organizing conferences and using electronic media to establish the fundamentals of the research area. We held six general meetings which researchers with the project joined, twice a year, where all the group leaders of the project reported their research results. In the general meeting in 1996, we accommodated the SCS (Space Collaboration System) for remote sessions. The research results were published in the annual reports. We also organized the symposia open to the public for three times during the term. In 1995, we presented realtime laboratory views through video communication channels that were established using personal wireless devices between six laboratories near the conference site. In 1997, the final year of the term, we held largescale series often open symposia at the research bases in the whole country. We published the results on the WWW for the public as well as the researchers involved to enhance information exchanges. The mailing lists and the printed newsletters were provided to inform the researchers of results and event schedules. The administrative meetings were held ten times in total for discussion, planning and arrangement of these events. The editorial program of the final report and its succeeding scientific book for the public was also discussed. In addition, we made the preparation fur application to the promotion fund for opening the research result of 1998. Under all these activities, we have successfully promoted the fundamental study on virtual reality, and effectively distributed the results to the public in Japan.
