Research Abstract |
The aim of this project is to elucidate the mechanism of sexual reproduction system of higher plants by means of dissection of genes. We have been focusing on two major projects organizing two project teams investigating process of differentiation and development of sexual organs (A team), and process of pollination and fertilization (B team). Supervisor committee was also organized in order to plan, execute and evaluate the two project teams. The most prominent progress is made in the following study : Inflorescence formation, sex chromosomes, meiosis, pollen-specific genes, pollen allergen, cytoplasmic male sterility, S-locus genes, recognition of self and nonself pollen, X-ray analysis of S-RNase, embryo formation and somatic embryo genesis. The supervisor committee organized joint meeting of A team and B team twice a year for presenting the progress reports of each project. The meeting of supervisor committee was also held twice. We published the newsletter 10 times a year and helped to exchange information. We also organized symposium and workshop on the special topics of sexual reproduction system, and meeting of young researchers, each once a year. These projects greatly accelerated to organize the collaborative projects and to publish the results of many joint researches. We have published the progress reports consisting of two volumes (570 and 589 page-book), that include the summary, list of all publications, and selected reprints resulting from tins study.
