Research Abstract |
Buddhism which developed in Asian countries established itself on their native cultures and had close interaction with them. For this reason, the researches by the researchers of Buddhist philosophy are not sufficient to make clear the true situation of Buddhism which lives in common people of Asian countries. Joint researches with researchers of Asian philosophies, histories and cultures other than Buddhism are crucial for the development of the investigation of this realm. The head investigator of this project has been related with two projects of such joint researches : the one is the translation of the Biyan-lu, a representative Chan literature in the Song dynasty, into modern Japanese, and the other is an inter-disciplinary research of Japanese Buddhism. This research project was planned based upon these two joint researches. The results of our research is as follows : In China, Buddhism had a close intercourse with Confucianism and Taoism, in particular in the Tang and Song dynasties and it continued even in the Qing dynasty. In Korea, Huayan philosophy was the basis of Buddhist culture. In Japan, the relation of Buddhism and the Shinto religion has been most remarkable ; nevertheless, the Bushi-do ethics and the fortune-telling based on almanac had close relations with Buddhism as well.
