Research Abstract |
1.From the Meiji Restoration until 1945, the Japanese government along with the private sector made numerousfield surveys. The research literature compiled from those sureyls not only describes the process by with the Japanese came to perceive China, but also provides on the spot information for understanding China at that time economically, politicallky, and geographically. The present sstudy aims to organize these valuable source mataerials into a comprehensive the bibliography with commentary. 2.After the research teams members were decided upon according to geographic region and discipline, some research reports on the sourace materials were prepared based on discussions about their character, value, and problems. The following conclusions were reached : In order to understand the source materials systematically, knowledge about the persons and organizations that performed the surveys is necessary. However, in reality, with the exception of the South Manchuria Railway Company, there is almost no research to date on other private organizaions such as the Koain. This is a subject that should definitely by pursued. 3.The researach team carried out joint research on the materials at the East Asian Economic Research Institute of Yamaguchi University, the Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Agriculture Libraries of the University of Kyoto, and the Oriental Library, recording their contents and philological characteristics. At the East Asian Economic Research Institute of Yamaguchi University, we noted that there exists many reports by the Japanese garrison on Qingdao at various locations in Shandong Province before and after the First World War. Research activity by the Japanese Army has not been the subject taken up by the research team until now, but this subject should also be definitely pursued in the future.
