Research Abstract

大小の観測データ検討会・研究会(12回)を開いて、GEOTAIL観測結果から代表的なイベントを選び、磁気圏前面および尾部の磁気圏境界面、前面の衝撃波、プラズマシート境界層で生起している物理過程の研究が進められてきた。また、「あけぼの」とGEOTAILの合同研究会を開催し、共同研究テーマについて提案と討論を行った。そこで得られた新しい知見のうち、代表的なものを下記に列挙する。
1.磁気圏境界面および尾部において磁気リコネクションの観測証拠が発見された。特に、プラズマモイドの中の詳細な電子・イオンの分布関数はその生成過程に対する重要な観測証拠とされている。また、プラズマシート境界層が時々slow-mode shockを形成していることが明らかにされた。このslow-mode shockの形成がプラズマシートの加熱過程の有力な候補であることが示唆され、その詳細な運動学的構造について研究が進められている。
2.磁気圏のさまざま領域に特徴的なプラズマ波動の描像が明らかにされた。特に、静電的波動については、同時観測の粒子データとの相関関係が明らかにされ、計算機シミュレーションの結果と併せて波動粒子相互作用の研究が進展しつつある。
3.太陽風磁場が北向きの時、近尾部プラズマシートに多量の低温プラズマが存在していることが発見された。その主成分はプロトンであるため、電離圏起源のものか太陽風起源のものかの決着は今のところ難しいが、太陽風起源とすると磁気圏境界層からの太陽風プラズマの輸送過程の役割が重要となる。いずれにしても、これは新しい問題提起となっている。
4.磁気圏前面の衝撃波の上流で観測される高エネルギーイオンの起源については、太陽風粒子の衝撃波加速説と磁気圏起源の粒子流出説の間に昔から議論の分かれるところであったが、前者の説を大きく支持する観測的証拠が得られた。
