Research Abstract

The researches on the follwing 3 items are conducted.
(1) Preparation and physical properties of functional fluids
Preparation of functional fluid was developed to indicate high functinability in an applied electro-magnetic field. Namely, preparation of ionic ferrofluid, iron-nitride magnetic fluid and liquid cristal based magnetic fluid were debeloped. These magnetic fluids show special behavior in physical properties such as magnetic and rheological fluid) is investigated in the dependence of it on the electric field in detail.
(2) Dynamics of functional fluids
[1] Micro behavior and aggregation mechanism of fine particles in magnetic fluid and ER fluid under the applied electro magnetic field are investigated by using numerical simulation technique to clarify the mechanism of high functionability of the fluids.
[2] Theoretical analysis of pipe flow characteristics of magnetic fluid (mainly, oscillatory flow) by taking into account dependence of particle aggregates and particles concentration change on magnetic field strength is conducted and compared to the experimental results. This prediction method shows good agreement with the experimental data.
[3] Pulsating flow characteristics of emulsion and artificial blood are clarifield. The electro-magnetic control of plasma flow and electric fluid jet is also investigated.
(3) High functionability of fluids and their applications
The improvement of fluid performance is proposed by utilizing multi-functional fluid components under electro-magnetic field. For example, combined effects of magnetic and electric fields on rheological characteristics of magnetic fluid are considered. As the application fields of functional fluids, performance eveluation is conducted for the development of seals, dampers, actuators and energy conversion system.
