Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to make an integrated study of mathematical education for the new century ; its philosophy, contents and the required excellence in teachers, with particular emphasis on analysis and recovery of Japanese youth's disinclination of mathematics and science, and with intention to provide some guidelines which are hopefully useful in reorganization of the new course of study by Monbusho for mathematics education in Japanese schools. Through our study and deliberations, the following results have been obtained. 1.The philosophy that the purpose of mathematics education is to foster mathematical literacy in students as well as to enhance mathematical thinking ability of them can and should be the basis of mathematics education for the new century. This will be equally effective for tertiary mathematics education for scientists and engineers. 2. The flexibility of curriculum which was introduced to the current high school mathematics with the core-and-options structure should be maintained in the coming curriculum. 3.A crucial effort to attain the objectives mentioned above is improvement of scholarship and competences of mathematics teachers. 4.Use of computers and graphic calculators in mathematics teaching and learning should be promoted.
