Research Abstract |
Based on comparative studies of Japanese, Chinese, English, German, French, and other languages, a theoretical investigation of the lexicon and the interfaces of various grammatical components have been conducted over the term of the project. As a result of our investigation, a number of problems with previous theories have been made clear and a number of findings are obtained, Some of the major contributions of this research are as follows : (1) Papers proposing theoretical improvement and development have been published in various journals ; (2) a new theory of the syllable is being developed ; (3) a fractal theory of language is being pursued ; (4) a number of new insights on voice, word formation, and other linguistic phenomena have been obtained ; (5) as an extension of our research, we have started the Special Research Project for the Typological Investigation of Languages and Cultures of the East and the West. With regard to the studies of the database of the lexicon, we have investigated the fundamentals of a systematic database of the lexicon, obtaining as major results the compilation of : (6) A New Inverse Dictionary of Japanese Accent ; (7) A List of Morphological Technical Terminology ; (8) an English database. An inquiry into interface problems has also been conducted, concerning : (a) the interface between words and syntax, (b) the interface between words and semantics, and (c) the interface between words and phonology, Some of the obtained results are published in Eibunpo e no Izanai (Invitation to English Grammar) and Report of the Special Research Project for the Typological Investigation of Languages and Cultures of the East and the West, etc.
