Research Abstract

1. It was found that many types of Haptic Skills included in each of "Manual Exploration" and "Operational Exploration" were effectively used in blind children's performance of shape identification tasks with objects (3-D), embossed figures (2-D), and plate shapes (with spatial aspects intermediate between 3-D and 2-D) as targets. Five types of Manual Exploration skills and four types of Operational Exploration skills of those haptic skills were so effective for shape identification mainly, while remaining haptic skills included in both of exploration were so effective for other attributes identification mainly, e.g.attributes of size, weight, texture, and hardness.
2. It was found that haptic skills were classified into two levels of exploration, namely, perception level and recognition level. Most of haptic skills used at shape identification tasks with objects or plate shapes were belonged to perception level exploration, which was matching between shape image of a target and configuration assembled of partial shape features of the target, but most of haptic skills used at tasks with embossed figures were of recognition level exploration, which was verification of possible mean of an embossed figure supposed during perception level exploration of initial term of the trial.
3. Although the research of this fiscal year was somewhat shorten on research of haptic skills development on infant period, comparison of features between visual shapes and haptic shapes, and development of equipment for haptic skills training, many findings since the start of this research were used and consisted of the manual for learning of haptic skills for blind children titled "For Enjoying To Look Diverse Shapes By Your Hands".
