Research Abstract

The lifestyle and environmental contributions to cognitive aging (onset of senile dementia, WAIS score) were examined by within-pair comparison in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins in later adulthood. In this study 185 twin pairs took a comprehensive medical examination at a university hospital. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 2,500 pairs of adult twins.
Serum concentration of Apolipoprotein E was assumed the strong risk factor of cognitive aging. Intraclass correlation coefficient of serum Apolipoprotein E was 0.468 in MZ twins and-0.048 in DZ twins. Heritability of Apolipoprotein E was estimated as 0.468. There were significant correlation coefficients between serum Apolipoprotein E was WAIS scores (Digit span test, Digit symbol test). The values of the intraclass correlation coefficients were mostly around 0.5 and showed significant within pair similarity of test scores. The mean score of WAIS tests declined with age advanced. Concerning lifestyle factors, alcohol drinking and occupation showed correlation with serum Apolipoprotein E.Higher consumer of alcohol within the pair showed a lower level of serum Apolipoprotein E within the pair. Naxis score of WAIS test also showed an influence on cognitive function (WAIS Digit Symbol test). DNA teromere length showed a strong similarity within the monozygotic twins.
