Research Abstract |
MAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY (MRS) IS A NONINVASIVE METHOD OF MEASURING THE CONCENTRATION OF CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES IN VIVO.31P-MRS HAS BEEN USED TO ASSESS THE VIABILITY OF ISOLATED ORGANS IN SMALL ANIMALS.SIZE CONSTRAINTS HAVE RESULTED IN LIMITED CLINICAL APPLICATION.HOWEVER,THE RECENT DEVELOPMENT OF A DEPTH RESOLVED SURFACE COIL SYSTEM (DRESS) HAS ALLOWED THE PERFORMANCE OF 31P-MRS USING WHOLE BODY MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) SYSTEMS. THREE PILOT 31P-MRS STUDIES WERE PERFORMED IN PIGS,DOGS AND HUMANS USING A WHOLE BODY MRI SYSTEM.THE NAD+NADH/PI RATIO IN PORCINE LIVERS DECREASED DURING PROLONGED COLD IS CHEMIA.HIGH ENERGY PI WAS PRODUCED IN CANINE LIVERS AFTER REPERFUSION WITH OXYGENATED BLOOD.IN VIVO 31P-MRS WAS PERFORMED CLINICALLY AND MAY IN THE FUTURE PLAY SOME ROLE IN THE ASSESSMENT OF PATIENTS WITH CIRRHOSIS.IN CENTERS THAT HAVE MRIFACILITIES,ORGAN VIABILITY MAY BE ASSESSED AFTER BRAIN DEATH CRITERIA HAVE BEEN SATISFIED AND CONSENT GIVEN FOR ORGAN DONATION.
