Research Abstract

This research is to develop a system that can identify or evaluate water samples by using an ultrasonic technique. We have investigated a liquid-phase sensor system with surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The following results have been obtained.
1. Development of SLAIS (SAW Liquid Analyzing and Identifying System)
We have realized a SLAIS that can detect some liquid properties simultaneously, such as viscosity, conductivity and permittivity. The oscillation method was used for measureing the change in SAW propagation characteristics, phase velocity and attenuation, and also a new sensor probe is fabricated.
2. Flow sensing system with shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) have been proposed and realized, that can identify many kinds of ionic solutions. The sensing mechanism is based on the difference of the time response in the flow system and pattern matching method is used for identification. By using the system, the concentration of a mixture with two kinds of ionic solutions can be identified.
3. New ultrasonic technique is investigated that can detect detergent water at low concentration by using a small droplet vibration excited with Rayleigh type SAW.Since the vibration frequency of the droplet is strongly affected by surface tension, we measure the frequency change due to the detergent.
