Research Abstract |
(1) Development of Optimum Design System for Absorbing Energy Maximization A efficient new technique for structural optimization of highly nonlinear structural behavior is developed by using the technique of design-of-experiment, analysis of variance, response surface approximation and mathematical programming, without sensitivities. The validity of the developed technique is confirmed by applying to basic numerical examples of crashworthiness. (2) Maximization of Dynamic Crushing Energy Absorption of Cylinder and Square Tubes The developed technique has been applied to the maximization design problems of dynamic crushing energy absorption of cylindrical and square tubes under mass and mean crushing force constraints. From the numerical results, maximum energy absorption is attained by increase the thickness and decrease the radius and edge length as much as possible without column bucking. The effect of stiffeners to the energy absorption was also studied, and it is found that the stiffener can reduce the mean crushing force and control the crushing patterns. (3) Crushing Experiment of Energy Absorption Effect Aluminum cylinders were crushed experimentally, and the absorbing energy is measured directly and compared with the results of numerical simulation. A new type of vehicle body structure is also suggested to absorb much crushing energy to prevent passengers from injury.
