Research Abstract |
AIM The FOK rat had been selected for heat tolerance and inbred. In the preseent study, it was aimed to study a wide range of characteristics of the FOK rat for the purpose of multiple use the inbred as an experimental animal. RESULTS 1.FOK rats secreted highly larger amount of saliva in response to heat from subman dibular glands than the other strains. It was suggested that the thermal salivation is induced by signals come from hypothalamus-superior salivatory nucleus to subman dibular gland. Subman dibular gland of the FOK rat was larger than those of the other strains. 2.Thermo genesis in brown adipocytes of the FOK rat was not activated at 37.0゚C and 39.9゚C by a low concentraition of b-agon ist (10^<-9> M isoproterenol) by which it was activated in the other strains. 3.In the thermo neutral zone, thermo effector thresh olds and preferred ambient temperature was lower in the FOK rat than those in the other strains. 4.The FOK rat was resistant to cold environment. CONCLUSION The heat resistant FOK rats were also cold resistant and significantly different from other stains in the thermo neutral zone. It can be expected for the FOK rat to be a experimental animal model for multiple use.
