Research Abstract |
There are few methods concerning an establishment of SPF animals. One is a foster-nursing and the others are artificial-nursing or embryonic engineering way. At first we attempted a foster-nursing way before accessing an artificial nursing way. We used four kind species of rodent for foster mothers of Syrian hamster*s puppies ; mouse, rat, Mongolian gerbil, cotton rat. This way was successful 6 days after birth. However it was found to be unsuccessful before 6 days and cesarean-derived puppies. We, therefor, analyzed several basic and necessary conditions which is successful method an establishing SPF hamster colony. These analyzes were included, a) comparison between hamsters and another rodent, b) behavior on nursing, c) normal weight gain, d) component of hamster milk and comparison with other animal milks, e) recipe for artificial milk, f) bacteriological analysis of gastro-intestinal flora of infant hamster, g) genetical analysis for gastro-intestinal flora of infant hamster, h) breeding of cotton rats. Several fruits were obtained as follows ; 1) hamster mammilla was different from another rodent, for example Castaneus, 2) nursing behavior of infants was also different from another rodents, 3) the component of hamster milk resembled swine and cat, 4) bacterial flora consisted of Bacteroidaceae, Gream positive anaerobic cocci, Lactobacilli, et al. These data were placed our hope on establishment of SPF hamster colony in near future.
