Research Abstract

This research project in cocerned to propagation and acceptance of Protestant Christianity in Meiji Period Kyushu, ie.how it propagated and what classes it accepted.
After the Anti-Christian Signboard was moved in 1873, Episcopalian, Reformed and Methodist missionaries began their fullscale evangellical works ; organized churches in native town, trained Japanese catechist (evangelist), and thenpropageted to some urban areas of Kyushu from Nagasaki Station. Lutherans began their worb in Saga, and Baptist in Fukuoka. Congregationalist came to Kyushu from Kyoto Station.
Evan elical works by those Protestant groups concentrated to the main cities of Kyushu such as Kumamota, Kagoshima and Fukuoka. Because, compared with rural areas, urban areasare more populated and relatively opened to new religious system. In their works, they had a tendencyto found schools, mainly teaching English, as a aid of their evangelization, some of which exist even today.
It can be obviously observed in Meiji Period Kyushu that a chracteristic of Protestantism in Japan was a religion of the intellectual.
