Research Abstract |
THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO CONSTRUCT A NEW SELF-REPORT SCALE OF MULTIDIMENSIONAL PERFECTIONISM FOR CHILDREN AND TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERFECTIONISM AND DEPRESSION. IN STUDY 1, ORIGINAL ITEMS OF A NEW PERFECTIONISM SCALE WERE ADMINISTERED TO STUDENTS FROM GRADES 4 TO 6 AND FACTOR ANALYSIS REVEALED THREE SOLUTIONS : DESIRE FOR PERFECTIONISM (DP), CONCERN ABOUT RESULTS (CR), AND PERSONAL STANDARDS (PS). THE FINAL SCALE OF 24 ITEMS HAD HIGH RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY. IN STUDY 2, STUDENTS FROM GRADES 4 TO 6 COMPLETED A QUESTIONNAIRE CONSISTING OF THE NEW PERFECTIONISM SCALE,PERCEIVED STRESSOR SCALE,AND DEPRESSION SCALE.STUDENTS OF LOW DP SCORE HAD HIGHER DEPRESSION IN COMPARISON TO THOSE OF HIGH DP SCORE AND IT WAS UNRELATED TO THE DEGREE OF PERCEIVED STRESSOR.STUDENTS OF HIGH CR OR PS SCORE HAD HIGHER DEPRESSION IN COMPARISON TO THOSE OF LOW CR OR PS SCORE AS PERCEIVED STRESSOR WAS HIGH. IN STUDY 3,5TH AND 6TH GRADE STUDENTS COMPLETED A QUESTIONNARE CONSISTING OF THE NEW PERFECTIONISM SCALE AND THE DEPRESSION SCALE THE FIRST TIME AND COMPLETED ONLY THE DEPRESSION SCALE THE SECOND TIME.DP SCORE WAS NEGATIVELY RELATED,AND BOTH CR AND PS SCORES WERE POSITIVELY RELATED TO THE DEPRESSION SCORE THE SECOND TIME CONTROLLING FOR THE DEPRESSION SCORE THE FIRST TIME.
