Research Abstract |
From the database of about 8000 Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, I wrote the paper named "An Essay on the Bureaucratic System of Western Zhou". The conclusions of the paper are as follows : 1. The former studies on Western Zhou bureaucratic system which assumed hierarchical structure, are unproven. 2. The essence of the order of Zhou kings is the direction on definite works, not on the position of a bureaucratic system. 3. The direction on definite works is expressed as a term of "si- (si-) ". The posts of a bureaucratic system, for example, situ (situ) , sima (sima) , sigong (sigong) , derive from the term of "si (si) ". 4. The term of "si (si) " means the direction on definite works, so it can not form the hierarchical structure of a bureaucratic system.
