Research Abstract |
The aim of this research has been the construction of a dotaku ("bell-shaped bronze") database with a graphics capability system, which until now has not been undertaken. During this research period, with the cooperation I received from various people and institutions, a thorough investigation of dotaku locations, literature and photo references to each dotaku, and preparations of sketches from photo surveys were entered to construct the database. The result, along with accumulating over 550 pieces of data, was the ability to put in order the previously incomplete dotaku register and include those of confused or unknown excavation origin, as well as those whose current locations were unknown, etc. This dotaku database is not another new listing of dotaku provenances, but it has the ability for comparative research of surface appearances of the many dotaku. The database can be a tool for identifying dotaku types and connections between dotaku made by the same molds as well as for regional comprehension. Another result is the greater ease with which the circumstances of period and spatial distribution of each dotaku type can be grasped. However, due to cost and time constraint, some data has yet to be obtained. Particularly there is an undeniable shortage of data from surveys. Due to the great expense of photo surveys, I was unable to undretake one within the research expenses of the time. However, thanks to the cooperation of various individuals and institutions, I was just able to carry out the work for the photo surveys. From here I can supplement and expand this database, and along with presenting the fundamental data of dotaku research to the academic world, I would like it to be useful in my own new dotaku research.
