Research Abstract |
In this research, I have aimed to elucidate the principles that govern anaphora and bridging reference in discourse in the framework of Functional Grammar, Information Structure, and Relevance Theory. The outcomes of the study are as follows : 1. In the framework of Relevance Theory, I have proposed in Kato (1996c) [International Journal of Pragmatics, VI] "Relevance Condition on Discourse Anaphora, " which claims to capture discourse anaphora. 2. I have proposed "Bridging Inferential Procedures, " and "Relevance Condition on Bridging Reference" in the framework of Relevance Theory in Kato (1996a) [Bulletin of Joetsu University of Education, 15-2], Kato (1996b) [English and Usage, 13], and Kato (1996c). 3. I have clarified the functional properties of passive constructions in discourse in the framework of Information Structure in Kato (1997, in press) [Bulletin of Joetsu University of Education, 16-2]. 4. In Kato (1997) [ms.], I have advanced in the framework of Relevance Theory, "Relevance Hypothesis for Wh-clefts", which claims to govern the functional characteristics of Wh-clefts in discourse. 5. I have constructed a database which stores examples of anaphoric expressions, bridging reference, and data concerned with information structures and Relevance Theory.
