| Research Abstract |
Inada collected referential books related to America' ssocio-cultural changes since the 1950s and Men's Study, and tried to grasp the social and cultural situation in which American adolescents have beenplaced during this period. Focused on J.D.Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951) and Sylvia Plath's The Bell Iar (1963) and categorized them as "A dolescent literature, " Inada explored their similarities and differences by comparing the protagonists' psychology, gender, socio-cultural environments, and socialization. The result of Inada's research is now on its way to be published as an essay.
Yoshida had access to the data base at NACSIS by Internet, thereby tried to obtain references concerning Gender Studies, adolescent psychology, American Social and Cultural Studies from both domestic and foreign institutions. Also, in some urgent cases, materials and references had to be obtained by visiting the related institutions. In 1995 Yoshida published two essays on changing masculinity in Adolescent literature and revisioned two of the well-known Adolescent novels, The Man Without a Face and The Chocolate War, from a viewpoint of Men's Study. From 1996 through 1997 three essays dealing with gender issues in the light of Post Colonialism were published, and two more English articles will be published by international journals soon. Yoshida is to read papers both at International Children's Literature Association in July and at International Research Society of Children's Literature in August.
Our unfinished assignments are to focus more on protagonists' ethnic diversity and their sexuality including homosexuality.
