Research Abstract |
The Ryukyu Islands have a known coastal fish fauna of 1,200 species. The 1,200 fishes are likely to harbor some 2,000 species of digenean trematodes. A total of 117 species of digeneans have previously been collected, that is, only 6% of digeneans are known from the Ryukyus. Digeneans of the Ryukyus seem to belong to the Indo-Pacific fauna. This could be expected given the fact that the fish are similary related. More collecting and identifying of the parasites need to be done in this area.
