Research Abstract

Dispersive fibers whose refractive-index difference between the core and cladding changes greatly with wavelength are proposed theoretically to make optical fiber devices with various spectral characteristics. However, experimental studies on dispersive fibers have not been reported yet.
In this research project, dispersive fibers are fabricated from optical glasses with different dispersions, and their properties are evaluated. When the dispersive fibers are drawn from bulk glasses, the refractive-indices change and their properties are modified. Therefore, the core and cladding glasses must be selected taking into account the changes of refractive-indices. The transmission loss of dispersive fibers is reduced greatly by polising the surfaces of the preform rod and tube, and becomes low enough to apply them to optical fiber devices.
Dispersive fibers are annealed under various conditions. Spectral characteristics of the annealed dispersive fibers are changed largely. As a result of experiments, it becomes evident that we can obtain dispersive fibers with various spectral characteristics by the annealing process under varied conditions and can control properties of annealed dispersive fibers by adjusting conditions. The annealed dispersive fibers are applied to single-mode fibers with broad spectral range, tunable optical fiber filters, and mode-field expanders. They display interesting characteristics which could not be obtained by using conventional fibers.
