Research Abstract

A study has been done for examining the Young's modulus and internal friction at room and higher temperature in a thick-walled tube of a functionally gradient material manufactured by a centrifugal method using a commercial purity 20 mass% Ni alloy as a master composites. The Young's modulus and internal friction have been determined by the measurement of flexural resonant frequencies using a fored-resonance technique on four rectangular bar speciments of differing thickness and hence composition. The Young's modulus of the A13Ni was determined from a correlation plot of assumed A13Ni Young's modulus values against the calculated resonant frequency values corresponding to the associated FGM Young's modulus values. By plotting the experimental FMG specimen resonant frequencies on this plot, the average A13Ni Young's modulus was found to be 187 GPa if the equation after Wakashima is used. The mean Young's moduli of these FMG specimens are decreasing with the thickness and temperature but the internal friction is increasing with the temperature.
