Research Abstract |
To demonstrate the usefulness of iron colloid-enhanced MR images (MRI) in differentiating between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hyperplastic nodular lesions (HN), microautoradiograms were prepared after administration of chondroitin sulfate iron colloid (CSIC) labelled with 59Fe in rat tumor models. Twenty rats were divided into 3 groups, normal, HCC and HN groups. In the HCC,0.06% 3'-Mmethydiaminobenzine tetrahydro-chloride (DAB) was administered for 3 consecutive months for tumor induction. In the HN,0.025% acetylaminofluorene (AAF) was intermittently administered for 4 months. HCC models were divided into 2 types, well-differentiated HCC (HCC-W), moderately to poorly-differentiated HCC (HCC-MP). By quantitative analysis using microautoradiography, the number of Kupffer cells per field of view was calculated. Furthermore, the images on the dark fields were transferred to an image processing system. A photosensitized area ratio (PAR) was calculated. These ratios were compared among groups. There was no significant difference in either the number of Kupffer cells or PAR between HN and normal liver tissues. In HCC-W,Kupffer cells were also present. However, their distribution was scattered, and the number of Kupffer cells and the PAR were significantly lower than those in normal liver tissues. In HCC-MP,the distribution of Kupffer cells was also scattered. Both the number of Kupffer cells and the PAR were significantly lower than those in HCC-W. In conclusion, iron colloid-enhanced MRI is useful for differentiating HCC from HN and diagnosing the degree of differentiation of HCC.
