Research Abstract

An instrument, called Laser Speckle Flowgraphy (LSFG), has been developed to visualize the blood circulation of human tissue on a 2-D color coded map. In this research project, to bring relative velocity read by the present LSFG into relation with absolute velocity, we have constructed a velocimeter which calculates the cross correlation value for some particle-images detected by an image sensor. For this velocimeter, we have developed a large frame memory board plugged in the ISA bus of a personal computer. The absolute velocity distribution accross the vessel is measured and displayd on the CRT screen. Using these two instruments, blood flow in the web of a frog's foot was measured, and the correlation was evaluated. It was found that the correlation coefficient is influenced by the diameter of the vessels, scattering properties of the background tissue, density of the blood cells, wall thickness, etc. To obtain the conversion table from the SBR or MBR values of the LSFG to the absolute velocity, we are modifying the software to measure the diameter of the vessel.
