| Research Abstract |
There are many place names unconcerned with letters on coastlines of Japan and its islands. My former research foretells me this fact. Therefore I set the purpose of this research on the investigation of many points over the whole Japan and its islands.
The results are as follows :
1.The characteristic geographical feature termes which predominate in the feature names of the seashore in Japan are classified to three kinds.
2.Three kinds are indentation, projection and reefs.
(1) Indentation has 7 names, which are Hama, Ura, Kubo, Wan, Ma, Tanpo and Buh.
(2) Projection has 5 names, which are Saki, Misaki, Hana, Tugai and Datsu.
(3) Reefs have 10 names, which are Sima, Iso, Isi, Iwa, Se, Ne, Sone, Hae, Kuri and Bizi.
3.The names of reefs are especially different among locations and sea areas.
4.I discovered that the word for "reef" itself varies widely. Several dialects are used for reefs and multiple dialects are simultaneously used in the same sea area.
