Research Abstract

(Objectives)
The aim is to clarify the influences of the mastication system on the causeing factor of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
This study was inspired by the study by Ohnishi, one of the authors, who did the overseas academic research in Nigeria, Africa. It is expected to determine the frequency of occurrence based on the clinical research results by estimating the influences of articulation, the mastication system and diet on the temporomandibular joint, especially the association with weight, load on the articular part.
(Results)
Differences were recognized in condyle in the comparative examination of P-A images of the condyle between the damaged side and the healthy side in 50 subjects with teeth and jaws suffering from one-sided TMJ.
It was revealed that the healthy side varied in shape more than the damaged side. It is also suggested that this should be a factor for occurrence of the disease because it is considered that the delay for adaptation on the damaged side will induce the disease by judging from the progressed remodeling and advanced adaptation in change of shape of the healthy side. The condyle changed less in Japanese subjects than in subjects in Nigeria, and it is considered that this stems from Japanese bone structure and daily food. The study results are intended to bring attention to the development of TMJ and malacia of the temporo-mandibular joint which have been warned aboutrecently, and also the tendency toward softer food. In addition, it is suggested that reconsideration should be given to metallic tooth fillings which can prevent physiological attrition and dental treatment system with crown and bridge prosthodontics.
