Research Abstract

In order to identify cortical negative potentials preceding jaw biting movements in humans, electroencephalograms were recorded from the midline-central (Cz), central (C3, C4) and temporal (T3, T4) areas accoring to the international 10-20 electrode system in complete denture wearers and natural dentition. The cortical negative potentials began 1.0-1.5s before the electromyographic onset of the masster muscle. All of these negative potentials could be considered to be Readiness Potentials (RPs). The RPs were detected from all the recorded areas of scalp. The amplitudes of RPs were largest in T3 and T4 that were ipsilateral to the biting side. In addition, the negative slope (NS) component observed from the ipsilateral area to the biting side, as it is known that the NS component reflects the activity of the pyramidal cells in the motor area. These results suggests that impulses from the motor cortex descending to the masseter muscle on the ipsilateral side are more powerful than those on the side contralateral to the biting.
Future study will be held to establish cortical potentials preceding masticatory movement in complete denture wearers, associated with adapting process with their dentures.
