Research Abstract |
The objective of this study is to collect and digitalize data of meteorological parameters such as rainfall for last three decades which have been accumulated by the Indoneshian Meteorogical and Geophysical Agency (BMG) as hand-or type-writing records, and to produce a useful database after utility checks on continuity and reliability which should fulfilll climatological blanks over the Indonesian maritime continent. In the first fiscal year (1996), investigators visited the central office and ten regional offices of BMG,and surveyed the status of operational observations (instrumental accuracy, continuity, recording method, etc.) at each offices. An implementing agreement on collaborative data collection and analysis was made at the Agency for Assessment and Application of Techonology (BPPT). Daily rainfall data at 160 stations for a period of thirty yeas (1961-90) were collected and digitalized from data available at the central office of BMG.Preliminary investigations on data utility

were carried out at BPPT,Bandung Institute of Tecnology (ITB), Kyoto University, University of Tokyo, etc. In the second fiscal year (1997), lacked and uncertain Data included in the database constructed in the previous year were supplemented or corrected by original or other records. data for other periods (before 1961 and after 1990), other parameters (hourly rainfall, surface pressure and temperature, etc.) and other locations (including non-BMG stations) were also party collected, in particular in West Jawa and West Sumatera Privinces. All the data were installed on computers at Kyoto University and BPPT,and analyzed together with inversigators of other institutions such as University of Tokyo, ITB,etc. Early results obtained from analysis of the database are as follows : climatology based on mean seasonal variations of rainfall ; onset and withdrawl of rainy season and their differences from cloud activities as seen by satellite observations ; statistical descriptions on delay and decrease of rainfall in E1 Nino years, and on increase in each preceeding years ; correlations between interannual rainfall variations and activities of intraseasonal and equatorial-wavelike variations ; etc. Less
