| Research Abstract |
バヌアツ共和国は隣接するニューカレドニアやフィジ-などと海溝によって遮られており、これらとの植物相の大きな断絶が推定された。これに対して今回の調査では、今までほとんど植物の調査がなされていなかったこの国最大の島であるエスピリツサント島の南北に連なる標高1000m以上の山地雲霧林を中心に調査が行われた。対象とした植物は蘚苔類、シダ類、裸子および被子植物に及び陸上植物で、蘚苔類では本地域からこれまで未報告のBryum,Ctenidium,Diphycium,Trematodonなどの蘚類、Haplomitrium,Treubiaなどの苔類の属に含まれる種、約900点を収集した。またシダ類はAsplenium,Schizaea,Adiantum,Cheilanthes,Cyathea,Pteris,Equisetum,Selaginella,Ophioglossum,Lycopodium,Hymenophyllumなど約600点の標本を、高等植物においてはGyrocarpus,Vaccinium,Piper,Peperomia,Polygala,Rubus,Alpinia,Melastoma,Begonia,Metrosideros,Calanthe,Liparis,Malaxis,Dendrobiumなど約600点の標本を収集した。これらの標本の中にはラン科植物などを中心に明らかに新種であると考えられるものがすでに幾つか認められており、さらにこれら標本の詳細な同定が進むにつれて、いっそうの新種が発見される可能性が極めて高い。
これら乾燥標本とは別に、生化学分析用、染色体観察用などの生植物も約150個体ほど採集され、これまでバヌアツの植物に対してまったくなされていなかった植物化学的、化学分類学的および細胞分類学的知見も現在相当数得られつつある。
これらの植物の同定に関しては、調査の一環として行われたバヌアツ共和国環境局局長ア-ネスト・バニ氏の招へいによって、より強力に実施され、バヌアツ山地植物相に関する報告書が出版される。
