| Research Abstract |
In 1996 and 1997 , The Botanical Expedition was performed in Vanuatu . The main research sites were the tropical montane mist forests around Mt. Tabwemasana and Mt. Vutimele (in 1996) and Mt. Vutimena (in 1997) of Espiritu Santo Island which is the biggest one in Vanuatu . The plant groups collected were bryophytes , pteridophytes , gymnosperms and angiosperms . About 1100 herbarium specimens including the Genara Bryum , Diphyscium , Trematodon etc. (mosses) , Haplonitrium , Treubia etc. (liverworts) in bryophytes , 36 families 95 genera about 210 species 1500 herbarium and live specimens including the genera Asplenium , Tmesipteris , Dryopteris , Cyathea , Blechnum , Ophiglossum , Hymenophyllum , Schizaea etc. in pteridopytes , and 79 families 196 genera about 250 species 3500 herbarium and live specimens including the genera Amyema , Astronidium , Vaccinium , Strongylodon , Macaranga , Flagellaria , Eurya , Coriaria etc. in gymnosperms and angiosperms .
For the identification of plant species collected , we invited Mr. Ernest Bani , Head , Environment Unit , Vanuatu in 1996 and Mr. Sam Chanel , Herbarium Curator , Department of Forestry , Vanuatu in 1997 to Japan . As a result , some new species , e g., Earina , Pachyplectron and Malaxis species (Orchidaceae) , and Phymatosorus species (Pteridophyta) were found . In addition , many new record species in Vanuatu were also detected .
