Research Abstract |
The research on strength and fracture of materials has been made on various size scales with solid physics, material science, continuum mechanics and so on. It is, however, pointed out that the recent demand for developing new materials as well as for using materials under severe conditions requires an unification of the microscopic and macroscopic research. To do this, the researchers who have studied the material behaviors related to strength and fracture need to gather, discuss and exchange ideas on the Meso-Mechanical Aspects of Material Strength and Fracture. The international research group was formed with this objective. During the research period1 three meetings were held. First meeting took place at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1996, followed by the meeting at California Institute of Technology in January 1998 and the last meeting was at Ecole Polytechnique in France, 1998. Through these meeting and cooperative research, a variety of ideas for achieving increased understanding of the behaviors related to strength and fracture.
