Research Abstract |
As the consequence of the success in short-term clinical use of artificial heart, longer term application of artificial heart for the bridge to heart transplantationis strongly required. This joint study was designed to perform cooperative research of the following items among University of Tokyo, Tohoku University, National Cardiovascular Center and Wien University under their longterm experiences to develop the artificial heart and biomaterials : 1) To clarify the problems during clinical use of artificial heart. 2) To develop a safer and more reliable artificial heart system that can be used clinically for longterm. The following outoutcome have been obtained in this year. 1 A cooperative member in Wien University was invited to University of Tokyo to discussed above mentioned items. 2 Seven Japanese members visited to Wien University to discuss about the clinical use of artificial heart. 3 The following discussions have been done through these interchanges : (1) the peformance, anatom

ical fitting and blood compatibility of total artificial heart and assist circulation that are developing in University of Tokyo, (2) the cause of calcification generated on the jellyfish valve and measures for it, (3) appropriateness of 1/R controlmethod of total artificial heart that have been performing at University of Tokyo and its possibility to apply clinically, (4) the relationship between frequency and blood distribution during the left heart bypass with vibrating flow pump developed by Tohoku University and appropriate ness of hemodynamics evaluation with chaos theory, (5) the improvement of the performance and blood compatibility of the centrifugal pump developed by Wien University, (6) the hemodynamic data, blood chemical data, control method, anticoagulant therapy and complications of clinical patients implanted a ventricular assist device for bridge to heart transplantation, (7) improvement of blood compatibility og an artificial heart by the materials and methods developed at National Cardiovascular Center. 4 These reurlts were reported at 42nd Annual Meetings of American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, 6th International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices, 23rd Congress of European Society for Artificial Organs and 34th Annual Meetings of Japanese Society for Artificial Organs.
