Research Abstract	マラリアは開発途上国の人々の健康と社会経済の発展を妨げる熱帯感染症の代表的な例であり、その制圧は世界的なレベルで急務となっている。本研究はマラリア原虫の寄生適応現象を分子レベルで研究する事により、新しいマラリア制圧学の構築ともいうべき新領域を確立する事を目的としている。総括班は本重点領域研究目的と研究計画を厳正かつ遅滞なく達成するために組織されており、各計画研究班間、班員間の共同研究、情報交換など有機的ネットワークの確立を推進し、研究成果の評価ならびに国際交流などの重要事項についての審議を行った。実際には交付申請時に立案した平成8年度の事業計画に従い、平成8年7月、平成9年1月に合同班会議を開催した。特に第2回目の会議初日は公開のシンポジウムとし、広く参加を呼びかけたところ寄生虫学や熱帯病学以外の分野の研究者も多く見られ、新聞など報道関係の取材も活発に行われた。本研究は発足したばかりであることから、まとまった大きな成果を期待するのは時期尚早であるが、SERAタンパク質など有望なワクチン候補(計画第1班)や、感染赤血球の血管への付着に関するknobの構造について原子間力顕微鏡による新知見(計画第3班)など今後の発展が期待される結果が得られつつある。また計画第2班が中心となって確立した抗マラリア剤のスクリーニング系はその試料の提供を呼びかけたところ数ヵ月で400以上の化合物が寄せられ、中にはマラリア原虫に対し高い選択毒性を持つものが見い出されている。この様に初年度は当初の計画目標をほぼ予定どうりに達成することができたと考えられる。
