Research Abstract

The aim of this project is investigating the research environments of Japanese universities and providing basic information about the environment where Japanese academic researches are conducted. We conducted a survey in 1996 for investigating the research environment of Japanese academic sector. The summary of the survey report is as follows.
1. Outline of the survey
This survey aims at grasping the actual research environments surrounding researchers in universities and inter-university institutes in our country. We sent questionnaires to 8,500 people, 5,000 of them answered. Items of the survey are research funds, research equipment and facilities, research support systems, and international research collaboration.
2. General analysis of the results of the survey
We provide overall situation of Japanese academic research environments comparing the differences among types of institution and among research fields.
3. Specific analysis of the results of the survey
We analyzed academic research environments of each field in detail.
4. Research funds
We analyzed research funds given to researchers in universities and inter-university institutes. Our analysis provides the evidence that the average amount of research funds for a researcher differs with types of university they belong to.
