Research Abstract	臓器移植法案が成立していないわが国においては、心・肝・脾などの臓器移植の臨床面では欧米だけでなくアジアの近年諸国からも大きく遅れているのが現状である。また、臓器移植法案が成立した後でもわが国の国民性から考慮して提供者(ドナー)不足の実態は容易に想像されるとところである。異種移植の臨床応用はこれらの問題を解決すると考えられる。本重点領域研究の領域代表者である高木弘は、異種移植の世界に先駆けた臨床応用をめざし、平成5年10月から異種移植シンポジウムを定期的に開催し、平成7年度より総合研究(A)「遺伝子制御による異種臓器移植臨床への総合的研究」で補助を受け研究を推進してきた。平成8年度からは本研究課題である、基盤研究(B)「遺伝子制御による異種移植の基礎的研究」において重点領域研究へ向けての企画準備調査をおこなってきた。ここでは、総合研究(A)とは異り、各基礎分野での優れた研究者を全国から進め、平成8年9月24日と平成9年2月7日に班会議を行い積極的な意見交換を行った。平成9年2月7日には班会議の後、第4回異種移植シンポジウムを開催した。この第4回シンポジウムでは、本基盤研究の班員以外の多くの施設から参加の強い要望があり、研究発表(演題)を公募したところ、全国から多数の演題が集まり、異種移植の関心の高さが証明された。この異種移植の研究は深遠でかつ広大な課題であり、その臨床応用には基礎分野での総合的研究が必要であることを痛感させられているのが現状である。異種移植研究の多大なる必要性は認めるものの、異種移植には臨床で数多く行われている同種移植とは異なり、未知なる数多くの生命科学現象に関わる基礎的な問題を解決することが必要不可欠であること、そしてこの分野は、免疫学、病理学、生化学、細胞生物学、分子生物学、畜産学、発生生物学など広範囲にわたり、学会、研究会など既存の枠組みでは到底達成できる課題ではなく総合的な研究を行わなければならないことを確認した。本研究領域は、世界的にトップレベルにあるわが国の基礎研究領域をさらに発展させ、その成果を臨床に応用するという社会的要請の高さから緊要な課題であると考え、重点領域研究の申請に至った。
