| Research Abstract |
今年度は、実海域における大規模な観測航海を実施した本研究計画の最も重要な年度であった。平成9年10月1日(南アフリカ、ダ-バン出港)より同11月3日(レユニオン島入港)まで、フランス極地科学技術研究所の観測船マリオンデュフレーヌ号(4500トン)を使用して、南西インド洋中央海嶺の観測を実施した。本航海は、インターリッジ計画の一環として、日本、フランス、英国3国共同で費用を分担して行なわれたものである。本航海には、英国Southamptom Occanorgaphy Centerの深海曳航式大型サイドスキャンソナーTOBIシステムが搭載され、南西インド洋海嶺軸部の詳細な海底イメージデータを取得した。また、この地、海底地震計による地殻構造探査、地震活動観測、マルチナロ-ビーム地形探査、地磁気・重力探査、地球化学探査を実施した。以下に、主な速報的結果を列挙する。(1)南西インド洋海嶺の軸部にもセグメント化が見られるが、大西洋中央海嶺のそれとは明らかに異なる。ノントランスフォームオフセットにおける火山活動が極めて少なく、火山活動の活発なセグメント中央部の対照的である。(2)70kmにわたる火山活動をともなわず、テクトニックに拡大している推定されるユニークなセグメントが発見された。(3)Inner Coner Hinghに相当する箇所に、10数km四方にわたる大規模な、デタッチメント断層を発見した。この他にも、2か所の顕著なデタッチメント断層を軸部に発見した。超低速海嶺拡大テクトニクスにおけるデタッチメント断層の役割が注目される。(4)規模の大きいAxial Volcanic Redgeを持つセグメントで、顕著な非対称拡大を確認した。このセグメントの北翼の海底は顕著な火山活動の跡を残すのに対し、南翼の海底は、火山活動がほとんど見られず、多くの断層が分布している。軸部の火山を片側の地殻のみにおしやる機構を明らかにするための格好のフィールドであると期待される。以上の成果は、英文航海報告(全86ページ)にまとめられ、各国の関連研究者に配布されるとともに、1997年12月の米国地球物理学連合秋期大会において発表された。
