Research Abstract

The aim of this research is to make clear by the enquete the tendency of aesthetic taste of the public. It was French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu who got the start of this kind research, but his main aim was to make clear the social classes of the art museums visitors and in fact he revealed they had the very high academic careers. However we have rather intend to make clear the aesthetic taste of the art museums visitors, namely, we have put 14 questions, such as 'By what work did you be impressed most of all? ', 'What kind of artworks do you want to look at other times? ', 'Have you interest in contemporary arts? ', directly to the visitors at the exhibition exit. In practice, we did enquete research at 22 public museums, 1 national museum, 2 private museums in Tokyo and the neighboring districts between October 1996 and December 1997, and got answers from total 5020 visitors.
Concerning the tendency of the aesthetic taste, works of art that have produced a good impression have converged upon specific ones at some art exhibitions and have dispersed over various ones at another exhibitions and this also relate with the sex distinction and age of visitors, then we cannot say definitely a marked tendency. However the visitors who have answered that the contemprary arts are interesting and enjoyable were there one and half times as many as the negative answerers. According to this data, we can say that the tendency of the aesthetic taste of the public is not so conservativ as it has been said
