Research Abstract |
After the Kobe earthquake in 1995, we consider a new direction in seismic design of buildings and structures. Recently various steels are utilized for structural material. For example, low yield-point steel is combined with main frame of ordinary steel, and used as a hysteresis damper. This damper is a device to absorb the oscillation energy by hysteresis loop of plasticization. It is expecting for seismic design. However better seismic design does not necessarily correspond to better wind-resistant design. This research pursues the optimum solution for structural design of buildings from both of a seismic and a wind resistant points of view. We investigate the elasto-plastic behaviors of buildings in strong wind as well as strong earthquake. Also various devices for hysteretic damping are examined in order to estimate their performances. We take into consideration the optimum seismic and wind resistant design for buildings with hysteretic damping.
