Research Abstract

1. For maintaining the equilibrium, there are the outputs to the extremities and trunk muscles, and also the eye muscles. In this study, we are going to investigate the eye movements to clarify a part of the equilibrium function. The eye movement is the three-dimensional rotatory movements along three axes through the center of eye ball, which are horizontal, vertical, and torsional. In order to investigate the eye movements properly, thus the three dimensional analysis is essential. The improvement of the 3D analysis system had been done through the studies during 1996 to 1997. The upgrade changes of this soft ware have been done after actual application of this system to the subjects in 1998. This 3D analysis system has become clinically applicable tool now.
2. The eye movement contains slow (pursuit) and rapid (saccade) movements. In normal subjects, we investigated these two eye movements three dimensionally. To analyze the rapid eye movements, the high speed CCD camera was used. The slow vestibular evoked eye movements including torsional movements exhibited same characteristic which have been observed other slow eye movements. The rapid eye component which are quick phase of vestibular evoked nystagmus showed same characteristics in horizontal and vertical movements. On the other hand, the behavior of the torsional eye movements showed possibly different movements compared to those two components.
