Research Abstract |
1'The Variation of Formalism in Aesthetics, Science of Art' Along with the History of Philosophy from ancient Greek to the 20th century, I gave an outline of the transition of the concept'FORM'. Generally speaking, from 'Material vs Form' to 'Content vs Form'. 2 'Maurice Denis/ Roger Fry/ Clive Bell' I clearlized the process how the formalist art criticism had been formulated, and soon after systematized in England in the half of this century. 3 'The Relation of Modern Criticism between Japan and England' I could grasp the relationship between modern Japanese art critics (especially 'Shirakaba school') and modern British critics of Bloomsbury groupe. 4 'The Change of Formalist Art Criticism in America' I researched how the Cezanne's works had been accepted in America in the 20th century, and then discussed how Clement Greenberg's formalistic criticism had been formulated in the influence of Hans Hofmann's theory about Cezanne. 5 'Theoretical Bases of Formalist Art Criticism' I focused Clement Greenberg and verified that his attitude had based on the theory of Kantian and Croce's aestetics, and Wolfflin's method of art history. However, as I said in Chapter 1, the concept 'FORM' has many phases, and so Greenberg's 'form' concept is very different from theirs. 6 'The End of Formalism ? ; On Some art Scenes after Greenberg' I gave overview of the art scene since 1960s that had made invalidated Greenbergian formalism. It has been facing troublesome chaotic situation and recently, I feel, being enervated and losing its way. The reason of their failure is that they have been hostile to any 'formalism', making no difference in treatment of 'formalism', I think so.
