Research Abstract |
This research concerns changes in family structure and resulting impact on educational practices related to the care and protection of young children. It was designed as a comparative study of similar conditions in Japan., France and the United States with a special focus on France. So far, however, only the data concerning France has been analyzed and the results published. Six findings and summarized as follows: 1) The values and views of rearing children in France have changed because of the current changes taking place in society. As the social activities of educated women have changed so that more are working outside the home, those with very young children have begun to prefer putting them in the care of a group education environment over the traditional way of leaving them in the care of an individual nursemaid. The number of young children being reared in group education environment has remarkably increased, and the socialization of children has been generalized. 2) The phenomenon

of a declining birthrate is accompanied by a transformation of family structure. Because of the changing structure of families, the idea of maintaining relationships with family members living outside the home has become very important as those family members tend to play critical roles as resouces for the children. 3) Group education institutions such as nursery schools and day care play important roles in supporting family functions and also as a key to making a society that is able to overcome a variety of differencies and provides a sense of solidarity for everyone. 4) Developing the intellectual capacity of young children is considered in connection with promoting their academic ability from nursery school as the beginning of lifelong study. 5) The greatest concerns for French day care are the involvement of parents and community in day care life and the promotion of cultural awakening from very early childhood. 6) French day care developed after World War II as part of most medical institutions for the purpose of reducing infant mortality. Now the basic culture of day care is distinguished by this fact ; the medical influence is still dominent. Less
